Beah: A Black Woman Speaks promotional photo

In partnership the U-M Dearborn’s African and African American Studies Program, the U-M Detroit Center launches the Sankofa Film Series. This year’s series is entitled, "Contemporary Artists Embrace the Elders: Harry Belafonte, Beah Richards, Elizabeth Catlett, Francisco Mora, and Pio Leyva". The series begins with the inspirational film, "Beah: A Black Woman Speaks", concerning the life of actress Beah Richards. Plowshares Theatre’s Artistic Director Gary Anderson will lead a brief discussion of the film following its showing. The event takes place at 6:00 PM, Friday, November 18. Admission and parking are free.

  • "Betty y Pancho" – An intimate portrait of African American artisitis Elizabeth Catlett and her husband, Mexican muralist Francisco Mora. Friday, March 16, 2012
  • "Sing Your Song" – An exploration of the life of entertainer and social justice advocate, Harry Belafonte.  Friday, April 20, 2012
